When I first read the title to Katharine C. Giovanni’s book it reminded me of the old joke – “Why is it considered sane to talk to God, but crazy if you hear Him talking back?” Thus, you can imagine the courage it took for Giovanni to write this wonderful book. In a very brief but powerful preface she tells us that “It is all about communication, not denomination.” So how do you know if the voice in your head is your own voice or that of the Godhead? The anecdotes shared by Giovanni, her family, and her friends state clearly that they knew in the moment of divine communication that it was not their own voice because the words they heard were clear, loving, and interrupted the tumultuousness of their own chaotic thoughts. However, it is this moment of divine communication in times of great stress that Giovanni wants us to understand that we can move beyond. That we can talk to the Divine and the Divine will talk back – in words and ways that we will clearly understand. This is a true how-to book with examples, exercises, and explanations for how to receive the answers to the questions burning within you. Whether it is the sound of your own voice or the sound of the voice of the Divine, learning to listen is the key to utilizing this power of sound in personal transformation.Review by Kathryn Lanier, who lives in Colorado with her eight year old twins. A LOOK AT A BOOK
A request to review a book came through my email box a couple of months ago. I admit it, I was a little put off by the title of the book, “God, is that You?” To be fair, I went to the author’s website, poked around a bit, and figured I didn’t have anything to lose. I received the book about a week later. “God, is that You?” is a slim, simply written, straightforward volume on how to communicate with a higher power. No more, no less. Katharine C. Giovanni doesn’t try to shove a particular dogma down your throat although the flavor is definitely Christian. While filled with anecdotal information, there are also several methods presented for the purpose of focusing one’s attention enough to “hear” God. I recognized several of the techniques from training I’ve done, but she manages to seamlessly blend her information and experiences into an easy to grasp format that doesn’t preach or judge. The book alternates between how-to tips and stories from the author and others about their experiences using this form of direct communication. Her enthusiasm and “can do” attitude will definitely reach you!The bottom line is that I found the book a worthwhile read.
Happy reading! Ruth Shelton

Author helps others have conversations with God by Cheryl Sherry

In reading God, is that you? By Katharine C. Giovanni, I was quite impressed with the author’s simple, yet substantial, instruction regarding communicating with God. Her refreshing, well placed humor throughout this spiritually based book was a bonus to those of us who have read many spiritually heavy works. I personally felt a connection with the author as she puts herself “out there” and invites you in to share a piece of her life and experience. Two methods are revealed to communicate with God, including meditation and non- filtered automatic writing. For the beginning searcher, this book is a must read. It is simple and to the point, not tied up in semantics. For the advanced student, the information may not be a new revelation, but more of a validation of what we have experienced along the path. This book is full of first hand accounts of God communications. As I read each person’s story, I noticed that this book included a wide range of diversity and belief systems. The one thing that does unite them, however, is their belief in God and their ability to converse with “Him” on a daily basis. This observation confirms Mrs. Giovanni’s claim that it is beyond any denominational line.
This book is well organized and takes the reader through an easy to understand process of prayer and meditation. I would recommend God, is that you? to anyone interested in going beyond philosophy and into the practical living of creating a relationship with God.
I would like to say thank you to Katharine C. Giovanni for being positive and quite certain in her faith as I felt this to be contagious, and for the reader, it is comforting to feel such confidence exude from the pages.

GOD, IS THAT YOU? How to have a conversation with God and really hear Him by Katharine C. Giovanni. $12.95, 1-931109-03-6, NewRoad Publishing. “It might seem crazy to you that God will speak to us in our own language, but when you think about it, why wouldn’t He? If God created everything around us, then it would be a small thing for Him to simply chat with you in a way that you could understand,” explains Giovanni. Writing from the heart, she shares her experiences in learning to go one step beyond prayer to actually talking with God. There are numerous stories of people who have had their own conversations with God, she says. One woman was driving down the street and heard “STOP THE CAR!” Luckily, she listened: “Milliseconds after I stopped, two kids ran into my car. One hit the side of my car with his bike, and the other child I would have clearly hit and killed had I not stopped at that moment.” Exercises teach the reader how to ask questions and listen for answers, enabling anyone to engage in such essential dialogues. -DKJ

“If you believe that God can speak to you, and you have no doubts, then you will be able to hear Him”, writes author and visionary Katharine C. Giovanni. How to rid yourself of such doubts and converse with God is the subject of her provocative new book, God, is that You?
Using real life examples (including her own), Katharine leads the reader to an understanding that, “God didn’t stop speaking to us thousands of years ago, and He didn’t just talk to people such as the pope and Mother Teresa”. You see, many of us are educated from birth to believe that we are not worthy enough to speak to Him. That’s called doubt and if you doubt your worth, you won’t hear Him.
God, is that You? teaches us two methods to “hear” God—meditation and writing. Katharine tells us (or is it Katharine?) to empty our minds and focus on turning inside to our soul or spirit. Ask, “God, are you there?”. Then write down the first thoughts that come to mind, no matter what they are. Or don’t write them down, just listen and remember, whichever is best for you.
In addition to recording God’s wisdom for us, Katharine also provides exercises on how to clear your mind, relax and focus, how to remove doubt and how to go within and talk to God. “God can help you discover–and realize–your own dream”, writes Katharine C. Giovanni in her new and wonderful book, God, is that You? She should know, Katharine has been chatting with Him since 1996.
In this reviewer’s opinion, God, is that you? should be on your must-read list!

This is probably one of the most thought-provoking inspirational books I have ever encountered. I was a bit skeptical when plowing through the first pages, because I didn’t believe that we could actually talk to God.
Talking to God has always been a metaphor to me, but not after I have finished reading Giovanni’s masterpiece. This book literally gave me goosebumps and a relief feeling knowing that there is always Somebody whom I can turn to at anytime.
As I read through chapter by chapter, I was astonished by the logical reasoning and arguments presented that we can all talk to God through the written words and meditation. The author also included examples of how people literally talk to God, including the author’s children and some personal friends. Some transcripts of successful talks with God can be found in Chapter 5: A Few Real Life Examples.
The author further explains how to cultivate our inherent skill to connect directly with God and use it readily into practice. In between the chapters, Giovanni beautifully inserted illuminating quotations by famous people and, who else, God.
All thumbs up for the courage to swim against the flow, I must praise the author. In today’s society where people don’t believe in talking directly to God anymore and the feeling of alienation is as common as the common cold, Giovanni has contributed a great workable solution. I won’t be surprised to find this masterpiece becomes a best-selling book someday.
GOD IS THAT YOU? Katharine C. Giovanni New Road Publishing 2002
Trade pb ISBN 1934409036 Inspirational nonfictionIn this book, the author dares to tackle a question many of us want answered. You have seen books about how to talk to angels, but she goes to the top, she dares to show how to talk to God, one on One. Giving simple steps and exercises, she instructs you on how to get quiet inside and be able to hear God inside you. Do not look for a guide on how to get a burning bush to appear or physical Old Testament type manifestation of the Father. The conversations happen inside ourselves, but with this guide you learn how to separate what is your brain from what is God. Examples of how others and the author herself have done this are given. While some of the concepts given may be disturbing or difficult to impossible to accept, overall, this is a very valuable, easy to read quick teaching manual that many people can benefit from reading.
