Conversing with God
Author says Almighty will answer; learn how to listen

By Charlie Mathews
Herald Times Reporter

Katharine Giovanni says she has learned how to talk with God, has two-way conversations with Him and receives answers in plain English that she can both hear and understand.

Giovanni does not want to keep this ability to herself.

She has written "God, is that You?", published by New Road Publishing, ISBN 1-931109-03-6, and available in paperback for $12.95.

It is not a book aimed just at Christians. She offers readers the opportunity to "have a conversation with God - and really hear Him."

Giovanni has been a meeting/event planner for 15 years and from her North Carolina home operates a concierge consulting business.

But, in passages from her book, she reveals her paramount calling is to share strategies for opening the lines of communication between oneself and God.

"I am not here to tell you what I think the truth is, because it is time for you to find your own answers, ask your own questions, and finally have your own personal conversation with God," Giovanni writes.

She compares herself to a telephone technician. Giovanni will "come into your 'house' (so to speak) and connect your telephone. Then I'm going to hand you the receiver."

Giovanni urges readers to not think themselves unworthy of having a conversation with God. She asserts God doesn't just talk to people such as the pope and Mother Teresa.

"Many people do not hear His voice because they are scared of what they might hear - what they think He might say to them about the way they've handled their lives," Giovanni writes.

She calls her first method for developing the ability to hear God's voice "going within using the written word."

It's as fundamental as sitting down "at your computer and opening a fresh word processing document."

Just let the words flow. Forget about the fight with your boss, your money worries, your quarreling kids, your demanding parents, and the broken car.

Giovanni assures readers "God will talk to you in your own language. God will answer your questions. God will help you with your life."

She must not have read any portions of the Bible describing a vengeful God who will punish the wicked. Not when she contends, "His way is love. Complete love. No punishment. No lectures. Nothing. Only love."

That belief makes it a lot less threatening to talk with God. But you are only ready to speak to God after you have removed all outside thoughts.

Her second "method" involves "going within using meditation picture the most beautiful place that you can imagine. Feel the ground under your feet. Smell the air. Hear the sounds around you."

After you're in the right mental state Giovanni says you'll be ready to discuss with God everything from money troubles, to health to career. "Ask Him anything you like. Can you think of anyone better to ask?"

Jesus is part of Giovanni's book only in the sense that he points to God as the source of faith, hope, and love.

Ultimately, the conversations Giovanni endorses and tries to help readers achieve is with God.

"Have faith and trust Him. God will not always tell you what you want to hear and will quite often tell you the complete opposite, but His words are true."
